Newborn baby clothes don’t last very long. It is absolutely amazing how quickly newborns grow out of their initial size. If you are expecting your first child and are already buying your newborns layette than you already know if you are buying newborn baby clothes for boys or newborn baby clothes for girls.
There are believe it or not parents today who do not know the gender of their baby before it is born. I know it is all the rage to know the gender and to even name the baby before he or she is born, but there are still some parents who like the old fashioned surprise of not knowing what their baby is beforehand. Of course, this makes it much more difficult to shop beforehand which is why most parent opt to know beforehand.
The truth is, sometimes we think we know before when we really don’t. I know someone who was expecting her 5th child. She had only 1 girl so was ecstatic when told that she was having another girl. She had 3 sonograms, ran out and purchased a whole layette of girl baby clothes. Then lo and behold, she had a boy. So there are no real assurances until the baby is born.
In terms of the newborn clothes, if you are buying before the birth there are a few options. The smallest size baby clothes is the 0-3 months. Many people don’t like to buy those as the babies seem to grow out of them almost instantly. When friends and families are buying gifts, however many of them seem to veer to the smallest size which is not so practical. When I buy a gift for a newborn baby I try to buy for a few months down the road. That way when the new mom has used up all her real infant clothing real quickly, she will have something waiting for her as her baby grows.
Many people who buy gifts for the newborns tend to buy these cute little outfits. What they don’t realize is that newborns don’t have that many opportunities to wear little outfits and instead spend most of their days in one-sises. I don’t mean the one-sies that are worn as undershirts, but I mean the one piece outfits that you don’t need socks for. In my day they were called stretchies and some retail establishments still call them that.
Then there are of course, for this green generation what we call organic newborn baby clothes. Organic clothing is clothing that is made out of 100% cotton. Many parents that are worried about their newborns being allergic tend to stick to the safe side of things by allowing only pure cotton materials to come in contact with their babies skin. Newborns are prone to a large number of allergies and this is one way of trying to curb it. Even though organic cotton is quite a bit more expensive than regular cotton or synthetic materials, many parents are willing to go for the extras expense. some will change back to more non expensive clothing when they determine that their babies’ are not allergic.
Before you know it these newborns are growing up maybe even wearing different kinds of clothing like flower girls dresses and ring bearer tuxedos as they march down the aisles of your dearest friends. It’s amazing how fast time flies.
